Turkey-Israel Split Reshapes Mideast

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 08:01 AM PDT

The Arab Spring uprisings and Palestine's bid for statehood at the United Nations are reshaping the political dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean region, but perhaps nothing is more important than the newly assertive role of Turkey and its split from Israel, reports Danny Schechter.

What Palestinian state?

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 06:54 AM PDT

For the past few weeks, a world of analysts and academics has been fretting and strutting hypotheses about the PLO's state-declaring endeavors at the UN. Across the pages of esteemed broadsheets, verbally diarrhetic blogs, and well-crafted op-ed sites, they bandy questions about the political and legal fall-out of this manoeuvre.

Statehood Showdown: US set to dash Palestine's high hopes

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 04:59 AM PDT

Key international financial institutions have confirmed Palestine is now economically strong enough to stand alone as an independent state. That's as President Abbas prepares to bid for full UN membership at the General Assembly later this week. The move has been strongly opposed by Israel and the US, claiming it would undermine chances of a return to peace talks.

Is Turkey the best model for Arab democracy?

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 04:03 AM PDT

Judging by the hero's welcome given to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his just-completed tour of the Arab world, it's not surprising that, once again, Turkey is being held up as "the best model for change" across the region.

Trial of Destruction: Sarkozy sued for Libya crimes

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 03:12 AM PDT

(You may find some of the images in Daniel Bushell's report disturbing) In Libya, the volatile situation shows no sign of abating - a month after Colonel Gaddafi was ousted. The country's interim leaders are struggling to form a cohesive cabinet - while their forces are still locked in battle with Gaddafi's remaining supporters. The defiant loyalists are making a last stand in three key cities. Sirte, Bani Walid and Sabha have been under heavy assault for over a week, with reports Gaddafi and his sons could be hiding there. Meanwhile, the rest of Libya is reeling from months of civil war, which has left tens of thousands dead. Ongoing NATO airstrikes have also reportedly killed a number of civilians by mistake. But some Western leaders are now facing charges at home over their military intervention.

Here We Go Again? 'NATO recruiting jihadists to invade Syria'

Across in Syria, at least four people were reportedly killed in crackdowns on anti-government protests on Sunday. The ongoing violence in the country has left more than two and a half thousand dead in the past few months. Moscow's stepping up its efforts to mediate a peaceful solution to the conflict. A team of Russian lawmakers is on the ground on a fact-finding mission in the country. They say Damascus appears to be committed to Democratic reform. The Kremlin is also circulating a draft resolution at the UN that's aimed at urging the warring sides towards dialogue. Moscow's approach rivals the US-backed draft, which targets Damascus and urges President Assad to step down. Political analyst Michel Chossudovsky says the Russian delegation will have its hands full in Syria.

Israel's False Flag, Jingoism And Inhumanity

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 08:13 PM PDT

Welcome to hell madames and sirs, ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, friends and enemies. Welcome to dystopia, a nightmarish incarnation where Orwellianism flourishes like fungus in the darkness of the forest and American jingoism and Western exceptionalism act as its foundational pillars. Welcome to a world where militarism is the religion of the masses and rituals of piety and righteousness include the spilling of innocent blood in faraway lands, inhabited by the undesirables commonly mislabeled as 'ay-rabs and moozlums,' or in classic Orwellian dialect understood in gleeful ignorance by these said masses, 'extremists, terrorists, fanatics, islamofascists, despisers of freedom, haters of liberty.'

Tapping the Israeli Embassy

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 02:06 PM PDT

Shamai Leibowitz, an FBI Hebrew translator, was arrested in May 2010 for revealing restricted information consisting of five reports classified "secret" to an unidentified blogger. He confessed—explaining that he had been trying to reveal illegal activity—repented, and was sentenced to a minimum term of 20 months in prison. He has now been released. There was considerable speculation over what Leibowitz, a left-wing, Israel-born dual national, had actually revealed. A New York newspaper claimed that the information had gone to a "pro-Palestinian Arab group."

'An Important Irritant': The Attack on the Mavi Marmara

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 01:13 PM PDT

In September, 2010, the UN General Assembly's Human Rights Council issued a report on the Israeli attack on the Mavi Marmara. It concluded that the blockade of the Gaza Strip was unlawful; that the blockade constituted collective punishment of the civilian population of Gaza; that the interception of the Mavi Marmara 'cannot be justified even under Article 51 [self defence] of the UN Charter'; that the attack involved violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law, and that the flotilla posed no threat to Israeli security.

Statehood Of Palestine From A Priests Perspective

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 12:53 PM PDT

Why Christians need to support Palestinian drive towards Statehood?

By Dr. Alex AwadBethlehem Bible College - September 18, 2011, I just finished writing an article on the Palestinian bid to be recognized as a state at the UN. I wrote this article for Christians who are wondering as to what is going on and why the Palestinians are making such a move that Israel and the US are vehemently against. If you think it is helpful, pass it to people who wish to be exposed to a different perspective.

Pulling the Thread of Self-Determination

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 12:03 PM PDT

There may be some truth in Israel's squawking that the Palestinian bid for state membership in the UN will delegitimize Israel. A cursory look over the history of Israel's creation reveals legal loopholes in which the legitimate state of the whole of historic Palestine remains intact.

Turkey's New Ascendancy to the World Leadership

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 11:14 AM PDT

The global balance of power is changing; and not just in ways commonly covered by the media.

The obvious indicators are hard to dispute. The United States, racked with crippling "strategic" wars and disasters – financial, industrial and natural – is imploding, soon to stand astride Britain, France, Italy, Russia and Japan as former colonial empires who wield influence only through coalitions and economic leverage. The USA in the next decade will no longer be able to stand alone as a superpower inspiring awe and fear; but rather cede the floor to the rising powers of the East.

The cruelest decade

Posted: 18 Sep 2011 06:42 AM PDT

Forgive me, faith, for never having any.Ten years after worlds collided on September 11, 2001, Pakistan remains a post-9/11 state with a pre-9/11 mindset. What is worse, the United States has also failed to treat Pakistan for what it is: A country stuck in the past.Good judgment comes from bad experiences, they say. In Pakistan, every year of the 9/11 decade has been crueler than the last. Extremists have increasingly attacked civilians, the Pakistan army and intelligence services alike. At least 3,000 soldiers and over 30,000 civilians have died at their hands. We have buried former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and said goodbye to a courageous and charismatic governor, Salman Taseer.

9/11: Ten Years On

On September 8, 2011 – three days before the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement warning of a 'credible, specific, but unconfirmed' terror threat in New York City and Washington DC. Most obviously, a terror threat that is at once credible and specific, and yet is unconfirmed, is self-evidently contrived.

Are Angels and Demons Real?

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Are we merely microbes living on a rocky planet, caught in the gravity well of a run-of-the-mill M class star on the edge of a common spiral galaxy, looking up and stupidly wondering WTF? Or are we really spiritual beings, temporarily existing as mortal pawns in a war between good and evil? Do alternate planes of reality exist, which we can only "see" if the circumstances are just right or when we finally croak?

Liberal media talks of double-dip recession; meanwhile US is in a Depression.

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 05:14 AM PDT

Many people may have thought that the massive wave of foreclosures must be over by now, roughly four years after the subprime mortgage crisis began. Most banks however were bending over backwards trying to make deals to avoid foreclosing on millions of other people. After giving people months, if not years of leeway, it's become obvious these people won't be getting good paying jobs anytime in the near future and the banks can't just keep taking token partial payments on mortgages. Add to that, large numbers of newly laid off government workers –many of whom should have been downsized three years ago shortly after this financial crisis began.
