Eighty year-old doyen of Palestinian prisoners to be freed

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 03:54 AM PDT

The Israel-Hamas prisoner exchange deal has forced the government of Benjamin Netanyahu to cross a number of red lines, of which one of great importance is the freeing of Palestinian prisoners who are citizens of the Zionist state. Successive Israeli governments have sought to include Palestinians from occupied East Jerusalem holding blue Israeli identity cards within the category identified as "citizens of the state" and whose future has been off the agenda, prisoners included. That has now changed as among those that Israel is now forced to release is the doyen of the Palestinian prisoners, Sheikh Sami Younis, aged 80, who has spent 29 years in prison.

Flu Paranoia Season is Here

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 03:49 AM PDT

The flu paranoia season is upon us, and, as usual, the government-medical complex is ramping up its fear mongering over … the flu. Coughing, sneezing, sore throat, diarrhea, fever, and other simple stuff has been elevated to life-and-death status. When I was a child, no one thought much about the flu – no one wanted to be sick, but if you got the flu you did your best to plow through it and get over it. Sure, the flu can kill some folks whose immune systems are not prepared for the onslaught, as can many other minor seemingly minor events, but healthy people also die falling off of porches and ladders in an unexpected manner.

Shamanism: Religion next door to medicine

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 01:06 AM PDT

Shamanism is the national religion in many regions of the Earth, including Yakutia. The ancient belief has survived the Soviet persecution of religion. During those atheist years the Yakut shamans were hiding their abilities. The remaining oyuuns, as they were called by the local population, and Udege (female shamans) soon found a loophole. With a talent for medicine, they found work as medical staff and veterinarians. Hiding under the guise of the Soviet medicine, Yakut shamans secretly conducted their magical rituals.

Year 2011 becomes one of the worst in US history

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:49 AM PDT

The U.S. Treasury announced the completion of another financial year. The budget deficit in 2011 reached record high, amounting to nearly $1.3 trillion. Experts consider it the worst result in history as a larger budget deficit was only in 2009. At the moment the U.S. economy is still struggling with the effects of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009.

In Debt Up To Our Eyeballs

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 06:34 PM PDT

The entire financial system of the western world is designed to be a debt spiral.  The total amount of money and and the total amount of debt are supposed to continually expand.  Today, we are in debt up to our eyeballs and it seems like nearly everyone is talking about "deleveraging" and reducing government debt.  But in a world where the entire financial system is based on debt, is there any way for massive deleveraging to take place without plunging us all into a horrific worldwide depression?  The governments of the western world have had a lot of fun spending money as if there was no tomorrow, but now tomorrow has arrived and all of that debt is rapidly catching up with us.  Politicians in Europe and in the United States are running around trying to come up with a "plan", but there is no "plan" that is going to fix the current debt-based system.  Over the next few years we are going to reap what we have sown.

Fight & Chaos: First video of 'Occupy Rome' rally turning violent

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 05:41 PM PDT

For latest updates, follow RT on and www.facebook.com What was initially planned as a peaceful "Occupy Rome" protest turned into a violent demonstration in the Italian capital. Police reportedly used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds of angry Italians. Protesters wearing masks and helmets threw rocks, bottles and other objects at police in riot gear. Some wielded clubs, while others were armed with hammers. The demonstration against the government's economic policy, with a crowd estimated at 200000, descended into violent chaos when groups of angry protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows and attacked shops. Protesters also attacked the Defense Ministry and set a wing of the building on fire. At least one person was injured and taken to a hospital, the Al Jazeera television network reported. The protests in the Italian capital were modeled on the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstration against capitalism and austerity measures, which went global Saturday with dozens of marches and protests worldwide. The website for the international movement said 951 cities in 87 countries were ready to "Unite for Global Change" -- the official slogan of the rally. Sizable protests were held in Spain, the UK and New York.

The Legend of Sirte

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 03:41 PM PDT

A legend is being created that is going to haunt the people who have been propelled into power in Tripoli. In Sirte a handful of men have set an example of bravery in the face of impossible odds that will eventually find its place in Arab history. Weeks of missile and bomb attacks have reduced the centre of the city to ruins and killed an unknown number of civilians. The photos coming out of the city show Beirut-style devastation. The fighters defending the city would seem to be doomed. They have their backs to the sea and are surrounded on three sides. We don't know who they are or how many of them there are. Some might be the remnants of the Libyan army and others civilians who have taken up arms to defend their city. We don't know why they are fighting. We are told that they are just fighting for their lives. We are told that they are mercenaries, but mercenaries put down their arms when the money runs out. We are told that they are 'Gaddafi loyalists'. That discredits them immediately. Noone really knows what they are fighting for, but their country has to be a possibility for at least some of them.

Five Banks Account For 96% Of $250 Trillion In Outstanding US Derivative Exposure

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 01:19 PM PDT

The latest quarterly report from the Office Of the Currency Comptroller is out and as usual it presents in a crisp, clear and very much glaring format the fact that the top 4 banks in the US now account for a massively disproportionate amount of the derivative risk in the financial system.

Specifically, of the $250 trillion in gross notional amount of derivative contracts outstanding (consisting of Interest Rate, FX, Equity Contracts, Commodity and CDS) among the Top 25 commercial banks (a number that swells to $333 trillion when looking at the Top 25 Bank Holding Companies), a mere 5 banks (and really 4) account for 95.9% of all derivative exposure (HSBC replaced Wells as the Top 5th bank, which at $3.9 trillion in derivative exposure is a distant place from
#4 Goldman with $47.7 trillion). The top 4 banks: JPM with $78.1 trillion in exposure, Citi with $56 trillion, Bank of America with $53 trillion and Goldman with $48 trillion, account for 94.4% of total exposure. As historically has been the case, the bulk of consolidated exposure is in Interest Rate swaps ($204.6 trillion), followed by FX ($26.5TR), CDS ($15.2 trillion), and Equity and Commodity with $1.6 and $1.4 trillion, respectively. And that's your definition of Too Big To Fail right there: the biggest banks are not only getting bigger, but their risk exposure is now at a new all time high and up $5.3 trillion from Q1 as they have to risk ever more in the derivatives market to generate that incremental penny of return.

Slaying the New York State Pork Dragon

New York State was once known to the world as the Empire State. After decades of government mismanagement and corporate plunder, the beleaguered taxpayer needs and deserves substantial relief. Pouring public funds into corporate coffers as "gifts" for the honor of having these enterprises conduct their trade is a practice that enriches the few, while sucking the economic life out of impoverished residents. The racket of "Corporate Welfare" gives new meaning to those famous words of General Jack D. Ripper – "A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice".

43,454,601,693,238 Reasons Why The World Is Broke – Presenting The Interactive Global Debt Clock

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 03:34 AM PDT

By now everyone has had a chance to play with the US debt clock. But what about its global cousin? Courtesy of The Economist, we now have a convenient way to track the hundreds of millions in dollars added each and every hour by the global governments who see to spur global deleveraging by, you guessed it, adding more debt. Yes, in the process the world's sovereigns are transferring default risk away from global corporations to sovereigns, but few in the #OWS crowd appear to have yet figured out this rather disturbing and very insidious usurpation of sovereignty by the global corporatocracy, so said risk and leverage transfer will continue until such time as any and all paper backed by these insolvent corporate shells (f/k/a countries) is completely worthless. Regardless, one should not forget that like in the sandalone case, the "debt clock" below only tracks on balance sheet debt. Should one add the NPV of all "welfare state" obligations (pensions, retirement, healthcare), the number will be well over quarter of a quadrillion dollars. Have fun funding that, never mind paying it off…

Lybia: Human rights impostors used to spawn NATO's fraudulent war

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 03:34 AM PDT

The names change but the methods remain the same. In Iraq the imperial war facilitator was Ahmed Chalabi. In Libya he goes by the name of Soliman Bouchuiguir, a shadowy human rights figure whose baseless allegations against Gaddafi were endorsed by the UN system and its affiliated human rights agencies without the slightest verification. Each one in his own way, Nazemroaya and Teil shed light on a failed system of international law and justice, which has made itself complicit in NATO's war crimes in Libya.
