American charade of double standards

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 06:34 AM PDT

The hullabaloo and tumult which the Western mainstream media have ignited during the past weeks over the fallacious report that a Christian pastor in Iran is sentenced to death on charges of apostasy once again underscores the hypocritical nature of the United States and its European allies, bringing to light the double standards which they have conventionally exercised regarding the human rights issue.

America's free-trade abdication

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 06:26 AM PDT

Most of all, Obama is badly served on trade by his senior colleagues. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for example, was opposed to trade liberalisation when she ran against Obama for president, and advocated a "pause" in free-trade negotiations. She also misinterpreted the great economist Paul Samuelson as a protectionist, when he said nothing of the kind. She has never recanted.

Orrin Hatch: OWS Rallies Will Turn Into Riots

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The political class in the district of criminals seems to have a wish – that the OWS protests turn to violence so the cops can be sent in and run them off. Establishment politicians hate the idea of citizens – described as motley by the corporate media – protesting against them.

Bitter pill awaits US in Afghanistan

Globalisation's government

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 05:02 AM PDT

Economic globalisation has, of course, produced some large benefits for the world, including the rapid spread of advanced technologies such as the internet and mobile telephony. It has also reduced poverty sharply in many emerging economies - indeed, for this reason alone, the world economy needs to remain open and interconnected.

It was only a matter of time: the weakest link in the otherwise awesome idea that is a remote-controlled military, represented by the thousands of Predator and Reaper drones, has always been its biggest strength: the fact that it is remote-controlled.

Freedom Lost

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 02:59 AM PDT

Many times I hear the ostriches among us exclaim, "What freedoms have we lost? America is the freest country on earth." We have all heard that, right? Of course, part of the problem is that, thanks to our education system, media, and churches, many Americans do not even know how to define liberty and freedom. The truth is, America's Founding Fathers were willing to pledge their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honor" and fight a bloody revolutionary war for far fewer abridgments of liberty than we Americans endure every day of our lives today. FAR FEWER!

California mandates ridiculous, untrue warning labels on natural bioidentical hormones DHEA and pregnenolone

Posted: 08 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT

According to a recent announcement made by the Alliance for Natural Health USA (ANH-USA) California legislators have altered the state's Health and Safety Code, Section 110423(b) to mandate that all pregnenolone and DHEA supplements sold within the state contain a label that warns of "serious adverse health effects." These allegedly include rapid heartbeat, dizziness, blurred vision and seizure, though none of this has ever been shown in trials.

What the Lamestream Media has Missed: Occupy Wall Street Is a Memo To Obama And The Establishment

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 11:49 PM PDT

Left, right, or center, most of the mainstream media has been utterly contemptuous of the nascent Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, as Jon Stewart has just illustrated adroitly with his signature wit. Of course the right-wing pundits cannot be beat for their overt contempt for the protests — it's all just a bunch of statist, communist, anti-capitalist malcontents, don't you know! Nothing good wholesome Americans should support, or even pay attention to.

The pentagon can stop its lies and the main stream media needs to come clean, as all the reporters that have covered this story are now shown to be liars.

US: The Five Macro Crises of Our Times

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 08:20 PM PDT

Our world has become very complex, [] and, as a consequence, it is increasingly open to macro crises of huge proportions.

Indeed, what makes our time such a dangerous period, I think, is the fact that we are facing simultaneously at least five intractable worldwide crises that it will take years to solve or to outlive. They are a financial crisis [] that it will take at least twenty years to jugulate, an energy crisis [] that's looming on the not too far horizon and which threatens the very foundation of the economic prosperity of the last half century, a double-barreled demographic crisis [] of a magnitude never encountered during the entire history of humankind, a political crisis [] that is related to the ingrained inability of governments most everywhere to solve society's problems, and, as a general background, a moral crisis [] that corrupts most institutions and makes them ineffective in promoting the common good. []

The Passionate Attachment

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 08:04 PM PDT

A passionate attachment of one Nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite Nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite Nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the Nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.

US: Haqqani Nightmares

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 06:53 PM PDT

Civil war in Afghanistan is raging since 1976. It saw relative calm and stability during brief spell of Taliban rule, but peace was snatched away by USA and the country was again pushed into the inferno. Ongoing war lit in October 2001 is continuing and has become the longest war in its history. One of the most impecunious countries of the world is being continuously trampled under the boots of US-NATO forces for over a decade without any respite and this gruesome process is likely to continue for some more time. Having failed to subdue Afghan resistance forces despite applying excessive force and dirty tricks, occupation forces are now at the verge of throwing in their towel and departing.

Wadah Khanfar: People should be at the heart of journalism

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 05:00 PM PDT

Beginning his speech following enthusiastic introductory applause, Khanfar went straight to the issue of his resignation and noted that he had chosen this year of all years to step down because "this year is unique". Referring to the eruption of protests across the Middle East, the Arab Spring was not unnaturally the dominant theme of the talk; this was the year, said Khanfar, when "something that was hidden" spread across the region as the people "regained their confidence". Mr Khanfar captivated his audience when he noted that after years of learning to retain his emotions, he had been brought to tears many times in 2011.

Across the Atlantic, the global financial troubles have reached the UK, as it becomes the latest nation to feel the pinch. Rating's giant Moody's has downgraded 12 of Britain's financial firms and banks, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds TSB. That comes after the Bank of England chief said the country's economy is at its lowest point since the 1930s if not ever. RT gets more on this from British Euro MP, Godfrey Bloom.

Press of Force: 'Police squash us like terrorists'

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 03:43 PM PDT

The banker backlash in the United States is spreading, with major rallies held in the capital, Los Angeles and several other cities. Thousands joined to express their anger at economic inequalities and high unemployment. The demonstrations began last month when protesters started pitching tents in front of the New York Stock Exchange under the banner 'Occupy Wall Street'. Earlier this week, heavy-handed police were filmed using batons and pepper spray to disperse the demonstrators. The aftermath of years of financial strife are causing people's patience to run out and they're angry at the banks for triggering it in the first place. Journalists who joined the campaign say the protesters will not stop demanding social and economic justice.

Washington targeting China's Achilles heel

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 02:08 PM PDT

The Washington-led decision by NATO to bomb Gaddafi's Libya into submission over recent months, at an estimated cost to US taxpayers of at least $1 billion, has little if anything to do with what the Obama Administration claims was a mission to "protect innocent civilians." In reality it is part of a larger strategic assault by NATO and by the Pentagon in particular to entirely control China's economic Achilles heel, namely China's strategic dependence on large volumes of imported crude oil and gas. Today China is the worlds second largest imported of oil after the United States and the gap is rapidly closing.

The Police State and Occupy Wall Street

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 11:26 AM PDT

We Don't Live In a Free Society:

I wrote an article over a month ago exposing the Obama administration's crackdown on civil liberties.  The piece begins with the assertion that "the United States is still the freest country in the world."  I was curious to see how readers would react.  A number of people commented that such a statement is so delusional that they had to stop reading.  At the time I thought they were perhaps overreacting.  But after witnessing the state's crackdown on Occupy Wall Street it has become clear that they were right.  We do not live in a free society.

Israel: Many Enemies, Much Prestige

In those days, at the very start of what was to be the First World War, country after country was declaring war on Germany. The spirit of the graffito reflected the hubris of the supreme commander, Kaiser Wilhelm, who relied on the war plan of the legendary German General Staff. It was indeed an excellent war plan, and as excellent war plans are apt to do, it started going awry right from the beginning.

Obama: The Assassination of Anwar Al-Awlaki by Fiat

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 11:20 AM PDT

There is ample evidence to suggest that the publicity surrounding the killing of al-Awlaki has greatly exaggerated his political importance and is an attempt to cover up the declining influence of the US in the Islamic world.  The State Department's declaration of a major victory serves to exaggerate US military capacity to defeat its adversaries.  The assassination serves to justify Obama's arbitrary use of death squads to execute overseas US critics and adversaries by executive fiat denying the accused elementary judicial protections.

A war criminal's "special mission": avoid arrest

Livni and other suspected war criminals have postponed visits to London for fear of arrest and, backed by the influential pro-Israel Lobby, had pushed the British government to effect changes to the law on universal jurisdiction. With both the Coalition Government and the Labour Party supporting these changes, ex-Foreign Minister Livni's visit to London was inevitable. William Hague said that he was "delighted" to welcome Ms Livni to London at a critical moment for the Middle East. "It was an appalling situation when political abuse of our legal procedures prevented people like Mrs Livni from travelling legitimately to the UK," he added. "We have dealt with this urgently as we promised to on coming to office."

An attempt to understand what we have done to ourselves

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 10:00 AM PDT

From the constitutional declaration issued on 25th September, we now understand that we have to wait for more than a year for power to be transferred to civilians in Egypt, unless something else unexpected happens necessitating further postponement. There is no guarantee that such a situation will not arise. What we hoped and waited for was supposed to be completed this year. According to agreements reached during the meetings of the Constitutional Review Committee, we should have had public elections in June. The elected representatives would then have chosen members of the constituent assembly charged with writing the new constitution within six months, opening the door for Presidential elections before the end of the year.

Turkey's policy towards Syria is a success

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 09:05 AM PDT

Most recently, some analysts argued that Turkey's Syria policy was a failed one, given Assad's unwillingness to take Turkey's advice on reforms. These analysts argued that, if Turkey chose not to project its hard power (such as creating a buffer zone, or possibly launching a limited military intervention) on Syria, this meant that Turkey had no leverage on Syria. Thus, they argued, we would have to consider Turkey's "zero problems with neighbours" policy a hollow one with no real substance or practical applicability. This perspective takes for granted the fact that Turkey's neighbourhood policy proposes a general framework rather than offering specific strategies.

Government demands that Israel be recognized as an official 'Jewish state' unmask fascist character of modern Zionism

Posted: 07 Oct 2011 08:58 AM PDT

The Israeli government's current mantra is that the Palestinians must recognise a "Jewish State". Of course, the Palestinians have clearly and repeatedly recognised the State of Israel as such in the 1993 Oslo Accords (which were based on an Israeli promise to establish a Palestinian state within five years - a promise now shattered) and many times since. Recently, however, Israeli leaders have dramatically and unilaterally moved the goal-posts and are now clamouring that Palestinians must recognise Israel as a "Jewish State".

Thai Media Catches Wind of "Occupy the Fed"

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 09:48 PM PDT

Even before its scheduled start this weekend, mention of the "Occupy the Fed" movement, which aims to bring attention to the real culprits behind America's economic plight, is spreading, not just across the United States, but overseas as well. The corporate-financier elite which dominates the Western media are attempting in vain to redirect the growing anger of the American people toward the middle class, with President Obama leading the way in a clumsy demagogic campaign of class warfare. Ironically, Obama's own administration is filled top to bottom with Wall Street bankers and Fortune 500 representatives eager to make sure the axe falls anywhere but upon their own necks. This fact regarding Obama's ties to Wall Street and even many of the GOP challengers for 2012 like Herman Cain, a former Federal Reserve chairman, makes such pandering farcical if not entirely offensive to the American people's intelligence.
